Xebec Adsorption Inc. to deliver SO2 dehydration unit to
Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corporation
BLAINVILLE, Canada, July 6th, 2007 – Xebec Adsorption Inc. has announced securing a landmark order for sulfur dioxide (SO2) dehydration. SO2 applications pose special difficulties requiring custom designed solutions not available with off-the-shelf components or standard adsorption hardware and technology. There is a very narrow design window in which the thermodynamics of adsorption will work: too high a pressure and the SO2 liquefies; increase the temperature and the adsorbent bed shuts down. This is a significant opportunity for Xebec to showcase their expertise in the field of adsorption.
The SO2 dryers will be an integral component of Gulf Chemical’s processing facility in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The plant which is expected to start up in the second half of 2007 will be a full–service spent catalyst processing facility, offering both RSD and HDS metals reclamation capabilities for the oil refining industry. This new facility represents a significant investment by Gulf Chemical and the only one of its kind in Canada.
“Our new facility is being meticulously designed and engineered to serve the project now and well into the future. The oil sands in Alberta represent the largest oil reserve in the world today. We intend to support its growth, with intelligent planning, every step of the way,” says Francois Bour, Chairman of Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and Vice President of Chemical and Recycling Activities of parent company Eramet Comilog.
“This SO2 dryer is the just the kind of specialized adsorption application we can deliver on. It showcases Xebec’s ability to understand our customer’s need and deliver a practical engineered solution,” commented Don Beverly, Vice President of Engineering.
